Intrepid anglers are capable of catching fish on the Oak in all of these flows, except for maybe blown AND dirty. Good drifts on lighter leads are still scoring some hook ups on some dark and slightly silver fish. Some LES is coming this weekend. Like we said, Zane Smith of New Brighton, Penn. Reports from the rest of the downstream water or other area smaller tribs are thin thanks to the light fishing pressure. Still no real cool down afoot and the forecast ahead thru the weekend and maybe some of next week looks warm. Ive heard from visiting Rec boats (AKA recreational) that west of the Point in 100-200 ft of water got em steelhead and coho salmon action. This is after mostly tougher action reported for the begin part of the past weekend. Only a sucker here and there reported. Register now and see your name at the top of the list! Most noticeable drop will be the Oak since the Canal flows are also throttling back. Otherwise you will be prompted again when opening a new browser window or new a tab. The other area smaller waterways trending slowly falling flows at around mod and slightly stained. Look for fish to be well spread upstream thru all the waterways with anglers wise to spread out too and try different spots to find fish. At least flows are stronger which helps combat icing back up. Good water flows will be the biggest factor for trout and salmon migrations in the Oak Orchard River and in the area smaller tribs and pushing them upstream. Canal seasonal feed and winter drainage water is done or nearly done and the trib levels remain up thanks to the natural run of the river contributions. Here on the Oak look for low and clear flows with bank ice and the downstream slow water areas frozen. Remember the season is closed until Dec. 1. See you all next year! Its a difficult forecast to predict what may happen to trib conditions but any over-the-all colder temps that will come along with the icing or snow should continue the dropping and clearing trend in the waterways to moderate in the Oak and low in the smaller waterways. The smaller side channels and Trout and Orwell brook all have fish; which are providing the most action at this time. The next significant rise in flows may bring on some fresh steelhead action thru Mar. Not big numbers of steelhead but a few that likely came in on the previous higher flows we had and are a good portent to upcoming steelhead action in the more traditional February or March timeframe. Some big steelhead are still in the Oak! A brown or two mixed in. Likewise find Kings steaming up the Oak too with good slightly stained flows all around. The salmon are scattered and after the marks are found, they are not hitting easily. Flows likely to remain up and stained at least thru the weekend. Flows can fluctuate by several feet in a short period of time. It might take lots of bobber watching or a few cast and retrieve/swing presentations to hook up on a post spawn brown or staging steelhead. Rain has been slow and steady so look for smaller area trib flows to go high and dirty probably stopping short of blown. Stay tuned tho for any future high water that could really perk things up. Landing a nice salmon today at the dam. There is some icing especially in downstream slow water spots and some bank ice. In early November and early December, all Lake Ontario tributaries (Eighteenmile, Johnson, Oak Orchard, Sandy and Salmon Creeks) will see higher flows. Its unknown if flows will stay as low as I saw today on recon, but likely flows will remain real low or optimistically may go up to less low. Chance of mixed bag precipitation and snow thru tomorrow and early Thursday. Classic scenario in the Oak where dirty water color lags behind the highest flows. Forecast is continued warm thru today and tonight with rain likely today/tonight. These 23 & 25 lb Salmon were caught in 450 to 500 fow.40 to 120 down, using Dipseys 180 to 220 just slightly west of the Oak. On the Oak thru the so far not too dirty turbine flows of today, guys have been scoring some fresher steelhead mostly nearer the dam. You could help give them their last meal! The action at the Oak rivermouth is something like a few fish each prime period like dawn or dusk. Steelhead have been there and more likely to trickle in. Our best spoons were Geezer, UV Watermelon, Midnight Special, Wonderbread, and 42nd. Wow! The best spinner/fly set up is DW Gator Flasher Spindoctor with an A-TOM-IK BAM fly. For now after the past weekend it looks like flows are back down some in the Oak to about med or slightly high and less stained. Greater impacts expected SW of here but the south shore of Lake Ontario may get some accumulations. Still on the cool and breezy side today with another brief warm-up forecast over the next couple days. Thru yesterday guys were into good steelhead action on some fresh fish on the highest flows while water color was not too bad. The large catfish are biting in Clyde and Palmyra. In subsequent years ahead when runs are made up of multiple year classes of fish the returns and fishing prospects could be even better! 400 Coppers, Divers out 220-240, Riggers down 80-90-100. Little to no fishing pressure because of the recent events, with the few anglers out enjoying action like this for early Apr 2020 steelhead in the Oak. Water color is real nice at slightly stained 2 ft of visibility so drift chances for now are the best theyve been so far this late winter/early spring period. Look for flows to stay up with the stained water color. 10 colors of FishUSA Stealthcore and A-TOM-MIK coppers in 150 & 200 took fish. Thankful for that continued Erie Canal water feed for select tribs as the forecasted precipitation at this time not likely to cause a big change in trib flows. So hopefully if it stays mild well look for rain or if it goes cold well look for snow so that good trib flows will prevail for steelhead action. Even though I wouldnt look for turbine flows to change much in the near term, once the water temps begin to rise even a little the drift chances should improve and more fresh fish will hopefully be evidenced all around. Expect water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations and whats been a delayed leaf fall. Forecast ahead thru the end of the weekend and into begin part of next week is a little warmer but still dropping back down below freezing at night. So come get in on the cold water action before the inevitable warmup. Water temps have flirted with 40 F but should slide back with the forecasted colder weather ahead. That could push more fish into the river plume and into the channel. Look for dropping back steelhead from the dam, a few spawning fish and a chance for fresh fish trickling in. Some anglers are spread out like in the other tribs east and west. Fishing Oak Orchard Creek, NY on 2/6/2023 will be best from 12:00AM through 12:00AM, and from 12:00AM to 12:00AM. At 100, temps were 50 (fairly warm to start) and 42 at the end of the day. (Deadline for the Open was Monday, 6/7). Fishing pressure is over-the-all pretty light and manageable. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. Fish for bass on Sodus Bay throwing-out worm rigs between the islands at the north end of the bay. To the east, like at Sandy Creek, the higher Canal bolstered flows have made for better migration conditions with pods of salmon bolting from the estuary holding water and spreading upstream, along with a few browns mixed in.. Oak Orchard River mouth mid Apr 2019. Consider how wet its been for months now, the high water tables, saturated fields and brim full swamp headwater supplies and youll come to realize the typical slow rise and quick fall of trib levels is going to occur more like quick rise and slow fall. Starting this weekend, they will be fishing at the Bar chasing Kings then return to the Oak around Memorial Day as the Kings migrate east. For now trib water temps are on their greatest fall so far this fall season. Anglers started out with a tough bite yesterday but reported better later in the day. The fish are going to turn on and off there so persistence is the name of the game and long and light presentations. Rigger: 65-95 down. On the south end of Newark has been a great place for catching bass. Flows should be back on the retreat already today with some stain hanging on. Best bass spots are downriver around Joseph Davis State Park and Youngstown near Fort Niagara. So well hope that if it stays cold-ish that some more snow will come. More then not, fish are still in good green shape. Weather is seasonable warm today and then forecast winter cold with wind for tomorrow and weekend. Well have to wait and see how much flows will change but it should bring flows up high but not blown. The Fishing Beat: Colder. The weather she is a changing again as has been the case for most of this trib season.
